The death of nine people in a farmers’ agitation in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday is likely to impact the forthcoming assembly election in the state which is expected to be held in early 2022. The incident is not likely to be forgotten soon, at least not till the upcoming UP assembly election. Even if the Yogi government of the BJP takes some more steps to ensure that it does not impact the state poll, the opposition would do everything to keep the pot boiling. They may employ methods to keep the memory fresh in the minds of the people and particularly the farmers who constitute majority of over 77 per cent of the state’s rural population.
