In a standoff, Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was stuck in his own country as the airport immigration staff blocked his exit. Even though Rajapaksa enjoys immunity from arrest, reports suggested that he wanted to leave the country before stepping down to avoid the possibility of being detained.
